| About Åre Åre (pronounced ”oar-rah”) is the jewel of the Swedish mountains. It is the largest ski resort north of The Alps covering some 97 kilometres (60 miles) of ski trails. The village is hosting the 2007 Ski World Championships as well as being firmly established as being a stop on the men’s and women’s tour. Along with having some of the world’s best skiing, with guaranteed snow; Åre has some of the widest range of activities you could wish for. Why not go on a guided snowmobile tour through the wilderness, enjoy the sensation of being pulled by a team of dogs when dog sledding, test drive a new car on the frozen lake, try your hand at cross country skiing on the 70 kilometres of prepared trails or even have a tandem paraglide down from the mountain? Åre has a much longer ski season than the rest of Europe, with guaranteed snow from the middle of December right through to (and including) Easter. Åre is split up into the following areas (from east to west): Björnen, Åre village, Ullådalen and Tegefjäll / Duved. Björnen is the perfect place for families or beginners with endless, gently sloping blue runs. Åre village is where all the action happens both on the slopes and in the evening, with some of the most challenging skiing and some of Europe’s best after-ski. Ullådalen is the place to wind down and take it easy amongst the beautiful mountain scenery and babbling brooks. Tegefjäll / Duved are the local’s favourite with un-crowded lifts and relaxed tree-lined slopes. If you are looking for a relaxing summer break then Åre also fits the bill. In summertime the village becomes a green oasis of fresh mountain air and action sports. The lifts remain open allowing sight-seeing from the top or mountain bikers to zoom down the slopes. We also have excellent walking, a challenging golf course, endless fishing and hunting possibilities and of course swimming or boating on the lakes. For those of you who have never visited Sweden before, you maybe have some pre-conceived ideas about life here; let us take a minute to dispel these myths. It is not prohibitively expensive - expect "London" prices, you can buy a decent bottle of wine for 60 kronor and a beer costs about 40 kronor. It is not dark all the while - January and February are a little darker than in The U.K., however we also have floodlit skiing, ensuring that you will ski just as much as you would in The Alps. It is cold - yes it can be cold, but the air is very dry so you don't feel the cold, especially if you dress suitably (don't forget a hat!). The country is full of beautiful blonde women - this one's true! Travelling to Åre There are three main ways to fly to Åre from the U.K. For guests living near London the easiest and most convenient is to book a flight through Executive Skiing from Heathrow directly to Östersund. Östersund is an hour away from Åre and there are many taxi services or a bus link to choose from. Secondly one can fly from Stansted to Trondheim across the border in Norway. This airport is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes away from Åre. At the airport you can hire a car, take a taxi or train to Åre. Alternatively many local airports have connections to Stockholm Arlanda and from here is a further hour's flight to Östersund. Most Swedish visitors arrive in Åre by train, taking an overnight sleeper from one of the major cities in Sweden and then waking up in Åre. The train station is located right in the heart of Åre. If you would like to drive to Åre, it will take you approximately 8 hours from Stockholm or 10 hours from Gothenburg.
